Founder Leon Sankofa, PhD, LCSW, is a clinical sexologist, board-certified clinical hypnotist, and a certified trauma practitioner. He and his team aim to support the family unit and help families overcome their challenges.

The Family & Youth Foundations team diagnoses and treats anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and child behavior problems like attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and other mental health issues. They also help people struggling with trauma and loss.

Many of the team’s patients are children who face losing their home or foster care place because of their behavioral problems. Family & Youth Foundations’ wide-ranging patient resources include hypnosis therapy, grief counseling, in-home counseling, mental health skill building, and outpatient services.

Dr. Sankofa earned his master’s degree in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. He completed additional coursework through the Public Policy and Administration Doctoral Program at Virginia Commonwealth.

His expertise includes mental health disorders (including substance misuse), school social work, and domestic violence. He devotes himself to causes like resiliency with youth, problems facing adolescent males, and building healthy family relationships.

Dr. Sankofa has consulted with treatment centers, public schools, mental health agencies, juvenile detention and adult correctional facilities, universities, and community service boards throughout Virginia. Leon also received the Men of Vision Award from Virginians Aligned Against Sexual Assault and the National Leadership Award.
